APPLY DECALS ON WHITE OR LIGHT COLOR GLAZES, CLEAR GLAZES MAY CAUSE DEFECTS.
THESE DECALS ARE DESIGNED TO BE APPLIED TO POTTERY THAT HAS ALREADY BEEN GLAZE FIRED.
1) Cut out desired decal.
2) Soak in room temperature or lukewarm water for 15 - 20
seconds. Don't force the decals, when ready, decals will easily slide off backing paper.
3) Wet surface area of the glaze fired pottery piece where decal is going to be placed. Place decal on surface of pottery with the paper backing side facing down. Now, gently slide the backing paper from underneath the decal. It’s best slide the backing paper away from the decal rather than trying to push the decal off the backing paper.
4) Now gently work the water and air out from under the decal with a squeegee or soft cloth. Be gentle, the decal is delicate at this point. Work from the center to the outer edges. Hold the decal in place with one or two fingers while you’re working out the water and air. A soft cloth or paper napkin works great for drying up any remaining moisture.
5) Let dry for a minimum of 4-6 hours.
6) Kiln fire: Inglaze decals need to reach the glost temperature where the glaze softens so that the decal pigments can sink in. Basically run your decal fire on the same temperature as your glaze fire. The full firing range of these decals are 1742 – 2282 degrees Fahrenheit. Fire at medium or slow speed. Here are some examples:
A) An earthenware body and a low fire cone 05/06 glaze that has been glaze fired at cone 06. Decal fire at cone 05 or 06, some of these glazes can even fire up to 04.
B) A stoneware body and a cone 6 glaze that has been glaze fired to cone 6. Decal fire at cone 6.
C) A mid rage stoneware body and a broad range cone 04-10 glaze that has been glaze fired a cone 6. Here you can do the decal fire a 04 or go all the way up to cone 6.
TIPS:
1) These decals work best on white or light color glazes. Clear glazes may cause defects.
2) Decals are semi-transparent, glaze color will affect final result.
3) Our process is CMYK, there is no white toner. White in the design is from the glaze.
4) If you have very hard water you may want to consider using distilled water for soaking.
5) You can “piggyback” decal firings on low-fire glazes during standard cone 04 bisque fires. Or, fire decals on mid-fire glazes during a standard cone 6 glaze fire.
6) If you have worked with decals that have a cover coat (usually a yellow film on top of the sheet), be aware that these are a bit more delicate during application since there is no cover coat. The flux (ground glass) that makes the decal glossy is not in a cover coat, but built right into the ceramic toners. This is why our decals do not have a halo or raised edge where the decal was cut out.
